Private 5G design for Ekahau

Vuono Group is a strategic digital engineering partner for Ekahau, a provider of wireless network design, optimization and measurement technology for organisations such as Google, NASA, and Verizon.

We built and launched with the Ekahau team a new software solution for private 5G network design with a scalable software architecture and features such as automatic wall detection and AI-assisted radio placement.

Vuono Group development team really went beyond our expectations and turned a complex engineering challenge into a next generation software solution within a tight schedule.

Take a closer look at Ekahau Private 5G.

Starting point: Preparing for a maintainable solution

When building a new solution, it’s essential to consider product life span, risks, and maintainability. Already in the proposal phase, we mapped out the probable risks regarding technology choices, processes, as well as performance and maintainability capabilities. We provided our thoughts on how to mitigate these risks and how processes can help reduce the probability of a risk realising.

Vuono Group's team of highly skilled engineers, special focus on process digitalization and strong proposal work convinced Ekahau, and they chose us as their partner to build the backend for their new private 5G network design solution. It expands Ekahau’s portfolio from Wi-Fi to private 5G and LTE, and offers a new customer experience that is fully browser-based.

Our team began by creating a recommendation for the tech stack. The idea behind the recommended technologies was to choose a stack that would scale with Ekahau’s needs, use technologies that are stable and maintainable for at least the next ten years and are expected to have long life cycles.

Solution: Building the browser-based solution with proven technologies that scale and last time

Vuono Group built the private 5G service’s backend together with Ekahau’s development and service design teams. After careful consideration, the suggested and chosen technology stack consisted of modern technologies such as AWS Fargate, Terraform, PostgreSQL, Kotlin, and GraphQL.

The private 5G service’s backend build started with backend developer team on Vuono Group’s side, focusing on a robust backend where the solution’s business logic and APIs are nested. The frontend then uses business logic to fetch and save persistent data from the backend. What’s also worth mentioning is that Kotlin was a technology no one in our team had used before, but we saw it as the best option for Ekahau and decided to learn it for this project.

The chosen technology stack enables increased efficiency, and Ekahau can get business benefits from long-term maintainability and knowing there will be support for the technologies for years to come. The backend is a truly modern solution that enables better productivity for the developers and uses high-quality technologies.

Result: Ekahau Private 5G

Ekahau Private 5G enables Ekahau’s customers to be more efficient in their business. For example, Ekahau Private 5G service can be used to build wireless networks in a logistics warehouse. Now, Ekahau’s customers can plan and validate the number of access points or plan how to get a signal that meets specific requirements in a certain location or plan for one or two access points to go out of service and still have a fully functional network. In addition, the Ekahau Private 5G has features such as automatic wall detection and AI-assisted radio placement.

We continue to work with Ekahau and Ekahau Private 5G.
