What makes Vuono Group a great workplace for software developers?

Software developers – they design, program, build, deploy, test and maintain software solutions. Without them, the modern world would look very different indeed. Technically skilled yet business-minded professionals are highly sought-after employees, and we at Vuono Group are very lucky to employ quite a few such individuals. 🥰

Like every employee here, our software developers play a crucial role in customer work and in shaping Vuono Group into the workplace it is. We asked some of them what makes Vuono Group a great workplace for them personally, and here’s what they said.

Favourite thing about work

I get to solve new problems every day. That's the nature of software development – you seek to understand the problem, then teach the computer to execute your solution so you can move on to the next problem.

WiFi network design principles and TypeScript programming

Having worked as a self-employed software developer for the last 10+ years, I can appreciate the benefits of working at Vuono Group. For example, our genuinely family-friendly environment helps me to prioritise work-life balance so I can be the best version of myself at home and at work. And sharing things about my personal life at work feels natural, too.

Talking about the workplace itself, the general atmosphere at the Vuono Group office is friendly and supportive and I feel like I am part of the community. It's rewarding to work with people who are more knowledgeable and smarter than I am, and I get to challenge myself and learn new things.

As a software developer, every day is different and I get to work on different domains. Sometimes it's about the big picture (such as identifying the customer's need and developing a data model), sometimes it's the nitty-gritty details of database transactions, cloud deployments and error handling. I get feedback from my teammates and the customer and that keeps me focused on quality work.

Favourite thing about work

People. It’s always about the people. I like consulting because it’s a bit like being able to change jobs regularly, without changing the people you enjoy working with.

How to create and run custom container runtimes in AWS Lambda

I joined Vuono Group last year, after over a decade with my previous employer, and not a day has gone by without me being happy that I did. People and culture go a long way, but of course, the work itself needs to be interesting as well. Luckily, Vuono Group is focused on doing meaningful work with customers facing real business problems. It all starts with a business goal, and to me, that is the most important factor of software projects.

An interesting choice of technology never hurts, and with the vast experience of my colleagues at Vuono Group, I know I can always throw ideas around and get help if needed. In a recent project, this led to us choosing Kotlin for backend development, which I had wanted to do for years. To read more about this, check out the case study.

Vuono Group really had me at hello. I felt the warm and friendly atmosphere already during interviews. It was obvious they were building a company with a strong focus on culture, with ethics and values I could stand behind. From the start, I’ve felt right at home.

Favourite thing about work

I am continuously learning new things and I get paid for doing something that I find very interesting and fun.

Most recent thing I learned

Currently, I am using the ory/fosite library to do the heavy lifting in an OIDC implementation. I learned about the persistence of implementation (or the lack of it actually 😓). But yeah, it is not always roses and butterflies. 😀

I wanted to join Vuono Group because of its open and transparent culture and the values that the company represents. I also knew the founding team and its track record from other Futurice companies.

By joining Vuono Group in an early phase I get a unique opportunity to be a part of building the company and its culture. I find the people-centric low/no hierarchy organisation with decision-making power very empowering. And I see clear examples of that every day – personally, I value the flexibility and freedom it allows for all of us.

The recruitment process also strengthened my views about Vuono Group: I felt that the team was genuinely interested in me as a person instead of fulfilling a developer role. I think this approach is really valuable down the line: although my work can be very technical at times, communicating my work to the client and working with the team require more than just technical expertise.

Joining a company is like walking into a good bar — you want to join it when you see it’s full of happy people.

Leaving things in a better shape than I found them

I have smart colleagues with a good mix of backgrounds, levels of experience, and specialities. Our company culture is built on trust and kindness, and we've been lucky enough to get together people motivated to uphold those values.

Our sales capabilities are strong, and our focus on being close to our clients’ core business helps ensure meaningful and challenging work. I enjoy building pragmatic and efficient solutions to business problems, and I feel like our setup at Vuono Group is ideal for allowing just that.

I enjoy working in an environment free of unnecessary bureaucracy where working practices are set up to achieve fast product iteration while simultaneously maintaining a high bar for quality.

Favourite thing about work

People and problem-solving. I love combining the two and working in an environment where like-minded people solve challenging problems together.

Most recent thing I learned

I’ve been able to study new languages and frameworks (like Kotlin and TypeScript) and through those understand better some principles and paradigms for application design and development.

I joined Vuono Group for three main reasons. Firstly, my passion is to help organisations to work more efficiently with the help of technology. Secondly, I wanted to be a part of a rapidly growing team from the beginning. Last but not least: I knew the team behind Vuono Group and their track record in building successful consulting organisations.

For me, finding like-minded people in the workplace is a huge plus. We have quite a few active and sporty people here, so participating in events like Jukola relay is second nature to many of us.

I also value the flexibility of combining remote and office days according to my schedule. Living in Tampere and visiting the client and Vuono Group offices is a natural part of my weekly rhythm.

Besides the actual consulting work, I get to contribute to building a compelling and inclusive company culture at Vuono Group which is something I personally appreciate highly.
