What Makes Vuono Group a Great Workplace for Data Engineers?

What makes data professionals choose one company over another? It’s rarely just about the salary or a list of technologies. It’s about the challenge, the impact, the culture, and the opportunity to grow professionally.

The guiding principle of growing our data team at Vuono Group is to create an environment where experts can thrive. To understand what makes this place special, we sat down with three of our own Data Engineers, Esa, Lac, and Mikko, to hear about their work, their challenges, and what makes Vuono Group a workplace worth recommending to peers.

The Work: Diverse Projects with Tangible Business Impact

A common thread in our conversations was the direct line between their technical work and solving real-world business problems. Our Data Engineers aren’t just building pipelines in isolation; they are creating models and systems that drive efficiency, optimise business operations, and improve customer experiences. They also play an integral part in embedding AI deep into clients’ business processes, not just building simple POCs that bring no value.

Just take a look at the examples from our Data Engineers’ work:

Esa has recently been deep in business operations modelling. “My role has been to transform raw data into actionable models that show how people interact with the firm’s goals,” he explains. In his most recent work, this entailed uncovering hidden inefficiencies in client operations and understanding precisely how marketing spend translates into consumer behaviour. It’s about turning complex data into a clear path for business optimisation.

Similarly, Mikko focuses on using data to enhance how organisations operate. “The most rewarding aspect has been seeing the tangible impact of the work,” he says. By bringing data into a process mining platform like Celonis, Mikko helps clients visualise their workflows, identify bottlenecks, and ultimately deliver more value to their own customers. Another significant area in his most recent work is the application of AI and automation tools in customer service.

Meanwhile, Lac has been working on a range of projects, including the development of an AI-powered assistant for our client, Gradia. This isn’t a theoretical exercise; it’s a practical solution to a pressing business need. “With the tool, Gradia can support more students and job seekers, as its customer support specialists can focus on helping with more complex cases,” Lac notes. Her work with the AI-powered assistant is already in full use at Gradia, directly empowering them to scale services and improve service quality.

The Challenge: Solving Fascinating, High-Level Problems

Great data engineers are driven by interesting problems. At Vuono Group, the challenges go beyond simple data transformation.

For Esa, a recurring intellectual puzzle is finding the right level of abstraction. “Striking the balance between detail and the bigger picture is always a fascinating problem to solve,” he shares. This is the art and science of data engineering: knowing how to model the world in a way that is both accurate and useful.

Lac highlights the cutting-edge nature of her work, such as debugging and reducing GPT model hallucination through tuning model parameters and prompts. She also points to practical discoveries made along the way, such as leveraging PostgreSQL’s native JSON data types to simplify data storage. This demonstrates a culture where learning and applying new techniques are integral to the daily routine.

A common challenge Mikko has been solving in client organisations is how to utilise automation and AI tools to enhance operational efficiency. “My role in AI transformation is to help organisations see what’s possible with these tools and plan how to enhance their processes,” Mikko explains.

The Toolkit: Modern Tech, Applied with Purpose

Our engineers work with a modern and versatile tech stack, choosing the right tool for the job. You’ll find a mix of:

  • Cloud Platforms: AWS, Azure and Google Cloud (e.g., Function App, Blob storage, OpenAI API)

  • Languages: Python, R, SQL, TypeScript/JavaScript, Scala and even Stan for statistical modelling

  • Specialised Platforms: Databricks, Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric, dbt, Apache Spark and Celonis

  • Core Tooling: Docker, Terraform, Jupyter notebooks, Node.js, and the rich Python ecosystem for data science and AI

  • AI tools: LLM & Generative AI, ML Frameworks, MLOps

The technology-agnostic approach ensures that our clients always utilise the best tools available, but also provides our team with the flexibility to approach problems with fewer restrictions and from multiple angles.

The Culture: Collaboration, Support, and a Focus on Value

Technology and projects are only one part of the story. The final, and perhaps most important, piece is the culture.

Mikko puts it best: “Compared to other consulting companies, Vuono Group stands out for its clear focus on business value. We don’t just build data or IT solutions for the sake of it—we make sure they are closely tied to process optimisation and real business outcomes.” This purpose-driven approach resonates with engineers who want to see their work make a difference.

The collaborative spirit and supportive environment at Vuono Group are important to Lac: “I value the support provided by my colleagues, who are very knowledgeable and are open to discussing problems and finding solutions together,” she says. “The culture of sharing experiences and lessons learned makes Vuono Group a great workplace for all engineers eager to broaden their skills.”

Esa sums up the unique blend that defines our company: “Vuono Group combines the craftsmanship and human touch I value in smaller consulting companies with an ambitious, growth-oriented mindset.”
